Authors should be cautious about emails or calls promising large numbers of book sales or reviews. Many of these offers are not legitimate and can put your account, reputation, and hard-earned money at risk.

Red flags include guarantees of sales or reviews, claims of #1 category status, or other “quick success” schemes. Be especially wary of anyone contacting you immediately after publication or a review from a reputable company like Kirkus Reviews, since this information is public and often monitored by bad actors. Also, be cautious of outreach from generic email addresses, such as Gmail accounts.

Legitimate marketing focuses on building visibility, engaging readers, and establishing credibility. It supports long-term growth rather than offering quick, guaranteed results. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
